A Ferrari
Through India
In India, the
auto-rickshaw drivers invite you into their mini-taxis with a touch of the
ludicrous: ‘Where are you going, sir? Step into my Ferrari ...’ The joke
helped to inspire some of the art work in A Ferrari Through India,
which was exhibited successfully in the Robson Gallery, Halliwell House,
Selkirk, in September and October 2009, at Woodbridge Gallery, Woodbridge
Road, Moseley, Birmingham in December 2009, and at Penicuik Art Café,
Midlothian, in summer 2010.
A
Ferrari Through India is an experiment, a visual and
poetic exploration of some of what the subcontinent offers. Images by fine
artist Joy Parker, inspired by folk art from various parts of India, and
texts by writer Robert Leach are brought to bear on the places, peoples,
landscapes and festivals the two encountered during a five-month journey
through India.
‘The texts
are not captions for the pictures,’ Joy Parker explains, ‘nor are the
images illustrations of the words. They complement one another, and some
unexpected results follow.’
The pictures are funny, caustic, sly, and very attractive. By using
bright colours and strong forms, they illuminate the life of the
subcontinent in unexpected but captivating ways. A book of the art works is
available for sale.
